Classic Reindeer Chow (Puppy Chow) - A Sweet, Crunchy Holiday Favorite

Prep Time 15 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 12 servings

Ingredients

  • 9 cups rice or corn square cereal (such as Chex)
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate for a sweeter version)
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter (not natural or oily varieties)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups powdered sugar (more if you want extra coverage)
  • Optional mix-ins: holiday M&M’s, pretzel pieces, mini marshmallows, crushed peppermint, sprinkles
  • Equipment: large mixing bowl, microwave-safe bowl or saucepan, spatula, gallon-size zip-top bags or large container with lid, parchment paper

Method

  1. Prep your station. Pour the cereal into a large mixing bowl. Line a baking sheet with parchment so you have a place to spread the finished chow to set.
  2. Melt the chocolate mixture. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth and glossy. This usually takes 1 to 1 1/2 minutes total.
  3. Add vanilla. Stir in the vanilla extract once the mixture is fully melted. Don’t add it before heating, as it can cause the chocolate to seize if it gets too hot.
  4. Coat the cereal. Pour the warm chocolate mixture over the cereal. Use a spatula to gently fold until every piece looks evenly coated. Take your time—crushed cereal leads to dusty chow.
  5. Shake with sugar. Transfer the coated cereal to a large zip-top bag (you may need two). Add 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, seal, and shake until well covered. If the pieces look sticky or patchy, add more sugar and shake again.
  6. Let it set. Spread the coated cereal on the parchment-lined sheet. Allow it to cool and set for 15–20 minutes. This helps the coating firm up and prevents clumping.
  7. Add mix-ins (optional). Once cool, fold in M&M’s, mini marshmallows, or pretzels. Keep the ratio balanced so the mix stays crunchy and not too sweet.
  8. Serve or package. Store in an airtight container or split into treat bags and tins for gifting. Enjoy within a week for best texture.
